Trinity Hymnal Cheatsheet

On the choosing of hymns of each week.

If you are a solo pastor, you know that crafting the worship each week can be quite time consuming.

Solo pastors prepare the Call to Worship, the Reading of God’s Law, the Confessions of Sin and Faith, the Assurance of Pardon (with the relevant scripture passages), the Shepherd’s prayer, and the Sermon each week for the congregation.

In addition, they must choose the hymns as well. In my experience, this has proven to be the most difficult because there are so many variables.

Which hymns match the subject matter of the worship and sermon preached?

Which hymns should we sing this week? Which hymns have we already sang?

Which hymns are my musicians capable of leading?

How familiar is the congregation with this hymn?

At Redeeming Grace Presbyterian, we typically sing 5-6 hymns each week from the Trinity Hymnal. We also have a few modern hymns which have been approved by the session.

Recently I decided to divide those hymns into the categories of our worship service, which are:

1. Worship/Adoration (After Call to Worship)

2. Repentance & Confession (Before the confession of sin)

3. Assurance & Celebration (After Assurance of Pardon, Passing the peace)

4. Submission & Reverence (Offertory hymn before sermon)

5. Gratitude & Response (After Sermon is preached)

I also created a category for communion hymns and Christmas & Easter hymns.

These categories are not concrete. Some hymns fit into multiple categories (such as Holy, Holy, Holy), so keep that in mind.

This categorization has helped me and I pray that it helps you. Feel free to copy and edit as you see fit.
